Keynote Speakers Fall 2008...
We are pleased to announce that Heather Davis, Dr. Larry Newell and Dr. John Lee will be the keynote speakers at our 59th Professional Development Conference.

In addition to the below keynote speakers, we will have a number of local and regional speakers who will present on a wide variety of topics. These speakers are from Michigan and surrounding States and help us to provide the most up to date information for conference attendees.

Heather Davis is the Program Director for the UCLA Paramedic Education Program and has served as the Education Director for the Los Angeles Fire Department. She is a licensed paramedic who has worked in rural Iowa, New York, and the Rocky Mountains of Colorado before moving to Los Angeles to teach. She is a published author and national speaker. She has been honored as Faculty of the Year and featured in EMS Magazine as a future leader in EMS.

Heather presented at our 56th professional development conference and we are pleased to welcome her back to Michigan. She will be presenting topics on teaching without lecturing and performing skill exams without using skill sheets. Both sessions are designed to improve classroom presentations and the effectiveness of education programs. The ultimate goal is to improve educational results and future patient care.

Dr. Larry Newell is the Executive Vice President of Jones and Bartlett Publisher. Prior to joining JB Publishing, Dr. Newell worked as the Director of Program Development for Health & Safety at the National American Red Cross office. He is a nationally registered paramedic, and an active instructor with several university teaching appointments. In addition, he is a popular speaker at many state and national public safety conferences. He completed his Masters degree at Baylor University, and his doctorate from Texas A&M University. Dr. Newell will be presenting topics on getting the most out of your EMS classroom and enhancing teaching effectiveness in EMS and fire service.

Dr. John Lee is the coordinator for the Multi-Ethnic Counseling Center at Michigan State University. He is a licensed psychologist. He earned his M.Sc. in Counseling Psychology from Western Washington University, and earned his Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from Kansas State University. He has been a keynote speaker and consultant to over 250 companies, agencies, colleges, and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Dr. Lee has edited 5 books and contributed several articles to professional and scholarly journals.

Dr. Lee will be providing conference attendees with a conceptual and practical framework to better prepare EMS students for "diversity" in pre-hospital care. He will focus on the difference between culture and race to allow instructors to understand and effectively address the issues of "diversity" in delivering emergency medical care. Dr. Lee presented at our 57th professional development conference and we are pleased to have him return for this conference.
